Events in Ivrea

From the historic Carnival of Ivrea to the traditional celebration of Saint Sabinus in July.

“Ivrea” means “Carnival” – the event that attracts thousands of tourists to the city every year and who, for the occasion, step into our history and become the stars of a celebration representing authentic local traditional heritage. Then, in July, there’s the Feast of Patron Saint Sabinus, bringing visitors and citizens together, with a rich programme of activities.

Carnival of Ivrea

The historic Carnival of Ivrea is an internationally-renowned Italian event celebrating the city’s origins and traditions.

In fact, the event commemorates the liberation of Ivrea, sparked by a brave young miller’s daughter who challenged medieval tyranny.

That heroic act gave rise to the famous Battle of the Oranges, a symbolic re-enactment of the popular uprising led by the young woman. In a whirlwind of colours, sounds and costumes, the legendary characters of that historical event take to the streets: the General, the Miller’s daughter, the Podestà (medieval magistrate), the Abbà (young representatives of medieval confraternities), the Orange Throwers and the ever-present Fifes and Drums corps. It’s an experience that transforms the city into a great open-air theatre.

The Carnival of Ivrea kicks off on 6 January and ends on Shrove Tuesday.
