The little village of Ceresole Reale, in the Upper Valle d’Orco, is nestled in the heart of the Gran Paradiso National Park, surrounded by peaks, forests and alpine pastures. Dozens of mountain trails start here and are suitable for all levels of experience. In summer, you can reach the high-altitude glacial lakes and lodges; in winter, activities range from icefall climbing and ski mountaineering towards the Nivolet to skiing and cross-country skiing.
At the foot of Monte Rosa, in the Aosta Valley. Lodges and alpine lakes, like the famous Blue Lake, are dotted across meadows and woods, with numerous panoramic paths leading to peaks and mountain huts. The ancient Walser settlements and alpine lodges serve as a base for via ferratas and for alpine trekking. In summer, the Monte Rosa trails are very popular, while the winter activities include skiing and ski mountaineering. This valley is also connected to Ayas and Cervinia by the TrekBus service.
On the edge of Valtournenche, Breuil-Cervinia is famous for the Matterhorn Ski Paradise resort, which attracts skiing and trekking enthusiasts in winter and summer. Several trails start from Blue Lake, including easy half-hour walks, and from the Plan Maison stations, taking you to the alpine lodges beneath the face of the Matterhorn. The scenic trails, like the Grande Balconata, offer views of the Matterhorn, Gran Paradiso and the Valais.
Courmayeur, at the foot of Mont Blanc, offers plenty of outdoor activities: wooded and alpine trails climb towards the Bertone or Torino lodges, or along the scenic via ferratas, like the Grand Balcon Sud. You can take the Skyway Monte Bianco to get to Pointe Helbronner (3466 m), the Torino Lodge and the Alpine Botanical Garden Saussurea.
In summer, trekking trails through Val Ferret and Val Veny offer spectacular views of the glaciers, while in winter, Courmayeur becomes a popular destination for skiing, snowparks and snowshoeing through the woods.
